A code audit might catch a misconfiguration before it ships. A penetration test might expose how a real attacker could chain vulnerabilities together. A bug bounty might surface something neither effort ever would have found. Each of these exercises brings value, but each one only shows part of the picture at a moment in time. But software risk constantly grows and changes as systems, dependencies, attackers and business priorities evolve.
Security gaps often live where handoffs break down: between development and release, between internal teams and external researchers, and between finding a problem and implementing a fix. And as AI supercharges the speed at which vulnerabilities can be found, patching cadence matters more than ever. When teams design a security program in which code audits, pentesting and bug bounties reinforce one another across the entire software lifecycle, they’re better positioned to find issues early, prioritize what matters and build safer products without bottlenecks and delays.
Moving from point-in-time testing to continuous improvement requires both structural changes and cultural ones, including how findings are tracked and how engineering and security teams collaborate day to day. Below, members of the Senior Executive Cybersecurity Think Tank share what they’ve learned about integrating code audits, pentesting and bug bounties into a security program that keeps improving with every test, fix and release.

Go Continuous—But Cut the Noise
Speed matters in modern security, but so does signal quality. Eoin Keary, CEO of Edgescan Inc., has more than 20 years’ experience in cyber and software security and has served on the board of OWASP. He suggests that penetration testing and general exposure detection need to move to a continuous model—but also notes that it’s a solution that has to be structured with care.
“The challenge is avoiding overwhelming teams with noise and false positives,” Keary explains. “Something that’s continuous can quickly overload any team if the output is not curated and focused.”
That concern has become more compelling as AI changes what attackers are capable of. Keary notes that speed of detection and accuracy are more important than ever, “given the AI genie is out of the bottle.” His prescription blends two complementary approaches.

Make Testing a Feedback Loop, Not a Fire Drill
Maman Ibrahim has more than two decades of international experience in cyber and digital risk and assurance across highly regulated industries. As Founder of Ginkgo Resilience LTD, which helps organizations worldwide with compliance, digital asset protection and operational continuity, he’s seen what happens when security efforts don’t talk to each other.
“When audits, pentests and bug bounties operate in silos, you get blind spots and repeated effort,” he says. “But when findings from each flow into shared threat models and backlog grooming, you get a feedback loop that sharpens over time.”
Ibrahim’s solution starts with structure. He recommends mapping each method to a distinct stage of the software lifecycle.
“Do audits before code is merged, pentests before a release goes out, and bounties after deployment—and link them with a central findings register,” he advises. “Make fixes traceable, and reward patterns, not just bugs.”
Ibrahim also advocates making security an integral part of the development rhythm rather than a periodic interruption.
“Build reviews into CI/CD pipelines so testing isn’t a once-a-quarter fire drill but part of the daily rhythm,” he says. “Most of all, connect engineering and security teams early and often. A security program is about making learning continuous, owned and visible across the build cycle.”

Design Good Controls Before You Test Them
Anand Salodkar brings an unusually broad vantage point to software security. As Co-Founder and COO of CompFly AI, he worked across external audit, internal audit and compliance before building a security company of his own, and that experience has shaped a clear conviction: Vulnerability is a foundational issue.
“One thing I have seen consistently is that many issues start with poor control design, not just poor execution,” he says. “If financial and security controls are thoughtfully designed, and there is a real culture of operating them consistently, organizations are in a much stronger position.”
For Salodkar, that means thinking carefully about the architecture of a security program. His framework for stronger programs rests on a balance between two types of controls that serve very different purposes.
“It is important to have both preventive and detective controls,” he explains. “Preventive controls help stop problems before they happen, while detective controls help identify issues quickly after they occur so the impact can be contained and lessons can feed back into the control environment. The strongest programs do not rely on one or the other; they build both into day-to-day operations.”
Build Security In, Don’t Bolt It On
- Move toward continuous testing, but manage the output carefully. A continuous security model only works if teams aren’t buried in alerts. Pair high-frequency testing tools with AI-assisted triage to keep findings focused and actionable.
- Map each testing method to a specific stage of the software lifecycle. Audits belong before code is merged, pentests before release and bug bounties after deployment. When each method has a defined role, they complement rather than duplicate each other.
- Create a central findings register and make fixes traceable. Tracking where vulnerabilities come from—and whether they get resolved—turns isolated findings into institutional knowledge that improves the program over time.
- Reward patterns, not just bugs. A single bug fix closes one hole. Identifying the pattern behind a cluster of bugs helps teams fix the underlying control weakness that’s producing them.
- Build security reviews into CI/CD pipelines. When security is part of the daily development rhythm, it stops feeling like an interruption and starts functioning as a quality check—one that catches problems earlier and at lower cost.
- Start with control design, not just control testing. Before stress-testing a security program, make sure its underlying controls are well-conceived. Thoughtfully designed preventive and detective controls give testing something solid to validate—and give teams a faster path to containment when something does go wrong.
Ensuring the Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts
Code audits, pentesting and bug bounties each illuminate something the others can’t. But their real value emerges when they’re integrated—feeding shared threat models, informing each other across the software lifecycle, and building a foundation that improves with every cycle. Security isn’t a series of tests to pass but a program to design, operate and continuously refine.
As AI accelerates both the pace of development and the sophistication of attackers, the gap between periodic testing and continuous improvement will only widen. Organizations that connect their security efforts—structurally, culturally and operationally—will be better positioned to find problems before adversaries do, fix them faster and build the kind of resilience that holds up under real-world pressure.
